The plastic milk crates work very well. You can find them at most Dollar General and Wal-Marts pretty cheap in the storage section. They are very washable and work very well. Put a nice layer of straw and some pine shavings in and they are good to go.
They stack nice too!!!

It needs be up about 2 -3 ft. A old dresser drawer with straw will work well. Some are designed with individuel sections so if you make one you might try that. If in a shed when your ready for them to lay eggs place a timer light bulb inside. They respond to light with better laying. But chickens are very adapable, even a old dog house raised up will be used.
