What material should I use for the egg to drop in the nesting box?

When they lay an egg, what would be the safest for the chickens and the egg and cleanest for it to lay on?

  1. Straw is a good option because its cheap though most feed stores only sell that in huge bales which can be a pain to store until you’re ready to use it. If you have a somewhat smaller production like I do the bagged pine shavings are nice. The birds like it because it’s easy for them to burrow down into when it’s cold. I use the pine shavings for my Mandarin ducks, Indian Runners, and Chickens.

  2. I use bedding hay from the feed store.

  3. I use straw and change it about every other day, best to put something like cut up roofing shingle or cardboard under the straw because sometimes you get poo and liquid nasties from laying the egg in your box, which can build up bacteria. only down fall to straw is if you get a mite problem it can give them a place to hide in the hollow of the straw.
