cheap solar tube for chicken coop

Just slightly improved an existing idea that uses plastic soda bottles as a skylight. Easy project for a shed or coop.

  1. I remember when I used to? be a chicken, all cooped up in that. . . structure they kept me in. I wish they had thought up this idea back then. All I had to see by was a hole cut in the roof. I’m just kidding, They used to let me sleep in their bed. I can’t believe you’re still reading this nonsense. There’s probably some better comments down below that are more pertinent to the video. Go on and read those and stop reading this one.

Why not turn the bottle over? The? bottom should be the same UV resistant plastic as the sides.

  3. @RedeemingDogs what would UV do???

  4. Okay, here’s an addition: paint the interior of these homes with phosphorescent paint to prolong the exposure to light.? Paint the exterior of homes that border major streets if night lamps are non-existent. Remember how long the glow-in-the-dark toys emitted light? Find the optimum materials and cost then deploy.

  5. @zoomerlawns NO!!! I WILL NOT! ;) ?

  6. @clucere Anti-freeze is “clear enough” though it would be sort? of like very old-fashioned “limelight” in that it would be the color green.

  7. @danyaklin Well, alcohol is “clear” anti-freeze and I don’t think the solution would have to be so strong as to cause a problem in summer months; it’s not getting as hot as the pre-ethyl glycol days when using alcohol in a car’s radiator would actually cause a boil-over and over heating.

But you did? raise a good question; does ethyl glycol anti-freeze HAVE TO BE the color green.

  8. do chickens need reading light?…I thought they had? kindles?

  9. I? like that!

  10. GREAT idea! Before the advent of electricity, colonial fighting ships used a similar technique, except they used? pyramid shaped pieces of glass that were were flush with the top deck and the pyramid portion reflected glass to the deck below the main deck. Very resourceful.

  12. What is the difference between? that bottle and a window..??

  13. Iseekoutthetruth

why not just install? a sky light?

  14. @86mustang07 – I had a? bottle laying around, I didn’t have an extra window laying around.

  15. @Iseekoutthetruth – I had a bottle laying around, I didn’t? have a sky light laying around.

  16. @GOP4USA ? – cheap plastic, bought it used off craigslist.

  17. @binashraf – a window is great -? if you have a window. I had a bottle.

  18. @danielmartinex – UV will break down the lid over time, when that happens I? will stick in another bottle or just a new cap.

  19. it is amazing but it is soler? powerd no light at night

@RedeemingDogs a old window. or piece of plexi glass would be alot better in letting in more light is all i? am saying.

  21. If? it freezes it goes boom!!!

  22. @NoItOmE87 – that is sort of true. If they freeze (which one has before) they split, and have to be replaced with another free? bottle. Takes about 45 seconds to do. Since they are in a chicken coop it doesn’t matter if they leak until I notice they are split.

  23. You could turn the bottle upside down and solve the? UV problem on the cap, mix it with a whole bottle of isopropyl alcohol and that solves algae and freezing issues. OR
you could just put in a window. People leave them at the curb a lot.

  24. @binashraf A window lets light in from one direction – a hole/window would just cast a circle of light on the ground. The water in? the bottle refracts the light in all directions like a light bulb – lighting up the entire room.

  25. Thank you.. I? love YouTube
